According to the Mayo Clinic, Bruxism is a medical term for teeth grinding and clenching, a condition in which you bring your teeth together, more commonly unconsciously. This action is brought about by muscle clenching, resulting in tooth contact, which is repetitive, often with  intense jaw movement. Bruxism may also be called tooth clenching or tooth grinding.

Bruxism is common. It can happen during the day or night. Bruxism which occurs in the daytime, causes clenching or grinding of teeth, often without being fully aware of why this happens.

If you have Sleep Bruxism, the clenching or grinding of your teeth during sleep, this is a Sleep-related unconscious jaw movement disorder.

Bruxism causes intense clenching of jaw muscles, which can often result in heightened jaw and jaw joint pain, especially in the early morning. This is due to nighttime subconscious jaw clenching and subsequent tooth grinding.

The problem is circular and requires a comprehensive assessment and management plan.

This is important. Unmanaged Bruxism can result in ongoing painful facial muscle pain, jaw joint pain, tooth enamel loss, tooth mobility and eventually (if untreated), tooth loss. Bruxism can also typically affect gum health.
