Oral appliance therapy is a very viable treatment option for patients with Mild or Moderate Sleep Apnoea. This treatment option has been available for many years now and can be a treatment of option for doctors and their patients, with Mild and Moderate Sleep Apnoea, or as an alternative to C.P.A.P. (mask therapy) as assessed by a patient’s Medical Consultant or General Practitioner.

The treatment involves a comprehensive patient assessment for device system suitability and system selection, to manage Mild and Moderate Sleep Apnoea or patients who are intolerance of CPAP.

Patients are referred to the Beacon Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic by their Respiratory Consultant, Ear nose and Throat Consultant or their General Practitioner for Oral appliance therapy, in the management of their diagnosis and symptoms for Oral Appliance therapy.

We also manage patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, and require an alternative treatment option. Some of these patients may have medical conditions, along with their Sleep Apnoea diagnosis and require close communication between Beacon Dental Sleep Medicine and their Medical Consultant and General practitioner.

There are specific Oral Appliance therapy systems and individualised assessment and device selection is central to successful Oral Appliance therapy, completed by a Dentist with specialised education in Sleep Medicine, Dental Sleep qualifications, training and experience in the management of patients with Oral Appliance therapy.

The selection process, fitting, management of the appliance system and monitoring of the selected Oral Appliance system is central to optimal patient care management.

Oral Appliance Therapy can offer a non-invasive alternative or adjunct to CPAP therapy, complimenting patient care management, under specialised Medical and Dental care.
