What can I do if I cannot tolerate C.P.A.P. (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure) also known as Mask Therapy?

If you’re unable to use C.P.A.P. for your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), there is an alternative treatment options which can help you. Discussing your preferences with your medical Consultant, form an important part of your Medical management of your diagnosis.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy O.A.T. is also known as M.A.D. Mandibular Advancement Device therapy. These device systems are medical grade, custom-fitted Oral Appliance Systems, which are effective, specifically with patients diagnosed with Mild to Moderate O.S.A. (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea).

Device therapy can be used when the device system is appropriately designed for each individual patient. It works by gently moving the lower jaw forward, specifically to open the airway (Oropharynx). Precise design features and placement are designed to keep the tongue in a specific position, to prevent it falling back contributing to airway obstruction. There are specific patient instructions, especially in the morning, when the device has been removed, designed to avoid any issues which could emerge, specifically temporomandibular joints or dental sensitivity.

Mandibular Advancement Device systems, also known as Oral Appliance Therapy, are appropriate when a comprehensive patient assessment is completed by a Dental Surgeon, specifically qualified and experienced in Dental Sleep Medicine. These specifically qualified dentists work closely with both medical consultants and oral appliance researchers in the management of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, progressing options for patients, specifically patients who cannot tolerate C.P.A.P. therapy.

Patients are generally referred by a Medical Consultant, having been diagnosed with mild or moderate Sleep Apnoea. Patients with severe Sleep Apnoea can also be considered for specific device therapy, when they are unable to tolerate C.P.A.P.

It is important the patient is assessed for any potential complications of Oral Device Therapy, which are well managed and mitigated, prior to therapy. Skilled experienced Dental clinicians are critical to successful Oral Appliance therapy.

It is important to discuss your specific needs with your Medical Consultant, to determine if Oral Appliance Therapy can help your specific diagnosis in the treatment of your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improves Respiratory and Health outcomes.
